5 Starter Herbs Every Witch Should Have

When it comes to magical tools plants have always been my thing. Plants and herbs are my greatest fascination and the base of my personal practice. Every witch, even if herbs do not call her, should have a few basic herbs in the house at all times.

You just never know when they will be needed. If you are new to magic or on a tight budget you may be looking for the right herbs to get things done without spending an arm and a leg to get started.

Often times it is as simple as raiding the herbs and spices at the grocery store or the bulk section at the health food store. These are my list of top herbs every witch should have.

Herbs are one of my favorite magical tools for closet witches because they can be used in stealthy magick and hidden in plain sight in the kitchen.

Lavender is one of the most magical herbs out there. For everything from calming a cranky child to protecting your home Lavender is sure to be your best friend once you get used to working with it.

From Magical to the everyday Lavender can be used fresh, dried or even as an essential oil. Diffuse lavender oil to help a colicky baby sleep, use dried lavender to brew a lavender tea to encourage psychic abilities and hang bunches of lavender around your home to add a layer of protection.

Sage

When witches think of herbs the first thing to come to mind is often sage. Sage is known for its ability to clear out unwanted energy and cleans well just about everything from you to your crystals with its smoke.

Sage is often used in healing and money spells. Sage represents wisdom, longevity, and protection.

You should strive to always have a sage smudge stick or two on hand. You never know when you will need a good cleansing of energy to make room for good in your life.

Sage is Masculine and ruled by Jupiter and air. Sage is often associated with the moon as well due to its silvery-blue leaves.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is my favorite herb to have on hand. I love the way it smells and can often be found burning Cinnamon Sticks to help me ground out my energy. As an Empath with a handful of children I need every bit of help, I can get when it comes to ground out.

Cinnamon can be used in spells for spirituality, success, healing, lust, protection, and love. Burning cinnamon can raise spiritual vibrations, aid in healing, encourage psychic powers, and create protective vibrations. Cinnamon is a great herb for attracting money and wealth.

Cinnamon is masculine and ruled by the sun and fire. Cinnamon is associated with the goddesses Venus and Aphrodite.

Bay

Looking to add herbs to your magic? Don't know where to start? Have a tight budget? Check out this list to get started.

One of the most common ways bay is used in magic is to write your wish or intention onto a dried bay leaf and burn it in the flame of a candle. This is a great easy, and quick spell for even the newest of witches.

Bay is good for protection, psychic powers, healing, purification, and strength. Place beneath your pillow to induce prophetic dreams. Hang in windows for protection.

Bay is masculine and ruled by the sun and the element of fire. Bay has been associated with Aesculapius, Apollo, Ceres, Faunus, and Eros.

Rosemary

Rosemary has amazing magical properties and is one of the oldest incenses, burned to cleanse energy similar to sage making it a great backup. Rosemary can be used as a substitute for much more costly frankincense and can be grown at home.

Rosemary is used for protection, love, lust, mental power, exorcism, purification, healing, sleep, and youth. Rosemary is a great essential oil to diffuse for a peaceful home.

Rosemary is Masculine and ruled by the sun and fire.
